Former Northwest Coach Heads to Clarksburg

The longtime football coach was forced out of Northwest last year.

Bob Hampton is back on the saddle again.

The longtime Montgomery County high school football coach who was forced to resign from his position as head coach at Northwest last year has resurfaced at nearby Clarksburg where he joins Larry Hurd’s staff as the Coyotes’ defensive coordinator.

Hampton, 67, replaces Will Gant who took over the reins at Poolesville.

“He’s been around a while,” said Hurd, who enters his sixth year at the helm of the Clarksburg program. “We’re happy to have him over here.”

Hurd, a Quince Orchard graduate, played high school football with Hampton’s son, Robb, on the Cougars’ 1991 state championship team.

Hampton had a 14-year stint as the head coach at Wootton, guiding the Rockville school to a state final appearance in 1990. He took the Patriots to the state quarterfinals a year later. His term at Wootton ended in 1996.

The retired Montgomery County Public Schools teacher has also had assistant coaching stints at Seneca Valley, Sherwood, Good Counsel and St. John’s (DC).

Northwest struggled last season, going 1-9, marking the worst record in program history since its inaugural campaign in 1998. However, the Jaguars earned a 16-6 win over Magruder in the season finale, a game in which seven sophomores started for Northwest.

“I think they’re going to be pretty good in the next couple years,” said Hampton.

The new Clarksburg defensive coordinator is looking forward to the upcoming season. The Coyotes finished 5-5 and missed the postseason last year but have high expectations heading into the 2011 campaign.

The turnout for Clarksburg’s offseason weight training sessions have been remarkable according to Hampton, a Germantown resident.

“We’ve been averaging about 40 some kids,” he said. “I’m really impressed with what they’re doing.”

The Clarksburg football program has compiled an impressive 37-16 record and registered three winning seasons since its inception in 2006.

“They are working extremely hard,” said Hampton. “They are really good kids. I’m very excited about this year.”
