Gaithersburg Quick Hits: Labor Day Parade, Junior Detectives and More

The following information was provided by the City of Gaithersburg:

— Gaithersburg is looking for community groups and other organizations to march in the 74th annual Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade in Olde Town on Monday, September 3, 2012, at 1 p.m. The city is also looking for organizations and individual volunteers to distribute program booklets, assist with parade line up duties and participate as characters in the parade.

The Labor Day Parade Participant Application and Agreement form can be found on the Gaithersburg city website. Both forms must be completed. For more info, contact Dorothy Winder at 301-258-6350 (ext. 136).

— Young crime solvers can earn their junior detective badge in a special event at the Kentlands Mansion on Sunday, July 22. Gaithersburg police officers will be on hand to help participants make I.D. badges, get fingerprinted, learn about neighborhood safety, witness a K9 demonstration, and check out police cars, motorcycles and other technology.

After completing all activities, new recruits will be sworn in as "junior detectives" by Police Chief Mark Sroka. The program is best suited for children age 5-12 and costs $10. Visit the Kentlands Mansion website for more info.

— Recycling pickup for residents whose usual pick up day is Wednesday, July 4 will take place the following Saturday, July 7. Bulk pickup for residents whose normal day is July 4 will be the following Wednesday, July 11.
