Wolfson’s Department Store Has Closed

Katz: 'It was a difficult decision.'

After 95 years in business, Wolfson’s Departent Store in Olde Towne has gone out of business.

“It was a difficult decision,” said Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz, who owns the store. “But I’m comfortable with the decision I’ve made.”

Wolfson’s—which sold clothes, hats, shoes and outdoor wear—closed for good on Saturday.

Katz said his family has operated the business since 1918. But his children didn’t want to take over. There were also significant remodeling costs pending and greater demands for Katz to spend more time at the store.

After discussing the issue with family, Katz said, the decision was made to close.

Katz said he’s looking to lease the space at 208 E. Diamond Ave. and hopes to have it cleared out by the end of the year.
