Man's Leg Amputated Inside Gaithersburg Sam's Club After Being Struck By Car

Police: A 31-year-old woman pushed her children to safety before being struck.

A 76-year-old man had one of his legs amputated inside a Gaithersburg Sam's Club Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle that crashed through a utility door into the store, Montgomery County police said.

The man was flown by helicopter to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with life-threatening injuries, said Capt. Jim Daly, a county police spokesperson.

Two other people were struck—a 31-year old woman in the store's parking lot and a 33-year-old man inside, Daly said. The man was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the woman was treated for minor injuries.

The woman had two children with her—ages 1 and 3—and pushed them out of the way of the car as it approached in the parking lot before being struck herself, Daly said.

The driver of the vehicle, a 77-year-old man, is in police custody and is being questioned by investigators, Daly said. He was not injured.

A four-door Buick LaSabre remained inside the store at 610 N. Frederick Ave., as of 2:15 p.m. The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m., Daly said.

Police have obtained video of the crash and are using it in their investigation, Daly said.

The car crashed through a set of utility doors to the right of the store's main entrance. Behind those doors is the Sam's Club food court, Daly said, however the two victims inside the store were not sitting down to eat.

The store remains closed for at least the rest of the day, Daly said. The utility doors must be repaired in order to meet fire code before the store can reopen.
