Gaithersburg City Councilman Ryan Spiegel has announced his plans to run for Montgomery County Council, The Gazette reported.
Spiegel is seeking the District 3 seat held by Councilman Phil Andrews, who’s leaving the post to for Montgomery County Executive.
Spiegel, an attorney, was elected to the city council in 2007 and was re-elected in 2011. His four-year term expires in 2015.
Spiegel said he’d bring “important combination of legislative experience and leadership style to the Montgomery County Council,” according to an excerpt of his announcement posted at the local politics blog Maryland Juice (>>>See: GAITHERSBURG COUNCILMEMBER RYAN SPIEGEL TO RUN FOR MOCO COUNCIL DISTRICT 3 at MarylandJuice.com).
As Bethesda Magazine notes, Andrews’ decision to run for county executive creates an open seat for the Rockville/Gaithersburg-based district for the first time in three decades.
Local businessman Guled H. Kassim is the only other person who’s announced plans to run for the District 3 seat, Bethesda Magazine reports. Former Rockville Mayor Rose Krasnow and political veteran Richard Parsons had spoken of entering the race but tell Bethesda Magazine they will not run.
The filing deadline is Feb. 25. As of Monday afternoon, no one had filed with the Maryland Board of Elections.
