Fire Causes Exterior Damage, No Injuries

The blaze was caused by improperly disposed of smoking materials, officials say.

A fire last night caused minor damage to the exterior of a home in the Deer Park neighborhood, fire and rescue officials said.

The fire, reported around 9:15pm at 136 Deer Park Lane, was caused by "improperly disposed of smoking materials," according to Capt. Oscar Garcia, a spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

The fire began on a table on the read deck and spread up the exterior wall of the end-unit town home, Garcia said.

Investigators estimated the damage at $10,000 and the family was not displaced, he added.

There were no injuries to the occupants or to firefighters.

Smoke detectors did not play a role in this blaze because it happened outside, Garcia said.

However, he encourages all homeowners to check their smoke alarms and make sure they're working properly.
