Gaithersburg Man Guilty of 52 Counts in College Park Robbery

Sergio Hernandez, 24, was found guilty on 52 of 53 charges in connection to August 2011 robbery in College Park, MD.

A Gaithersburg man found guilty Friday on 52 counts of robbery faces up to 180 years in prison.

Sergio Hernandez, 24, robbed nine victims during a party in College Park in August 2011. He stole cell phones, cash and other electronics from guests at the apartment in a complex near the College Park Ikea, according to prosecutors.

“When our victims and witnesses come forward, it can have a tremendous impact on the outcome of our cases,” Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela D. Alsobrooks said in a statement. “This case demonstrated how much the criminal justice system relies on victims and witnesses. When people come forward, our process is strengthened.”

Hernandez faced charges including theft, robbery, robbery with a deadly weapon, assault in the first and second degree, and use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence. 

More than 15 witnesses, some of them victims, showed up in court to testify against Hernandez, according to the statement.
