Young Girl Found Dead In Family Home

Police are investigating the death as a homicide.

The body of a young girl was found Tuesday night at her Gaithersburg home, and police are investigating the death as a homicide, officials said.

The girl, whose age and name have not been released, lived in the 700 block of Raven Avenue, Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks said at a press conference shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Police were called to the house for the report of a pediatric injury just after 7:30 p.m., he said, but upon arrival, fire and police officials found the girl already dead.

Few details about the injuries, where in the home the girl was found, and the circumstances surrounding her death were available at the time of the press conference.

"We're classifying this as a suspicious death, and to cover our bases, we are investigating this as a homicide at this point," Starks said.

He said he couldn't say why police believe it to be a suspicious death.

He declined to say whether there are any suspects at this time, because police are still in the early stages of investigating.

"Right now, this investigation is about three hours old," he said. "It's still very fresh. We're in the gathering of information process. We need to gather as much as possible right now while it's fresh, analyze that, and then make those types of decisions."

Investigators are interviewing family members and neighbors to determine what happened.

The house is in the Glen at Hidden Creek, a townhome development near the intersection of Girard Street and North Summit Avenue.
