Delaney Unseats Bartlett In Maryland's 6th District

Maryland 5th District Rep. and Democratic WHIP Steny Hoyer introduced the state's new 6th District Rep. John Delaney at approximately 10:20 p.m.

Delaney thanked Maryland's 6th District constituents and said his campaign was about standing together and working for the common good of the country.

"I promise to work as hard as I can to make differences in your lives, pursue opportunities, and help overcome challenges," Delaney said in his acceptance speech to supporters at the Bolger Conference Center in Potomac.

The newly elected Congressman thanked his family, staff, supporters and Rep. Roscoe Bartlett for his 20 years of service.

Bartlett, 86, issued a statement after falling short in his attempt for an 11th term:

It has been my great honor to serve the constituents of the 6th District of Maryland for the past 20 years. Although the election did not have the outcome we had hoped for, we can hold our heads high knowing that we have fought for the principles and values we care about.

I would like to congratulate John Delaney on his victory and thank him for a hard fought campaign.

I also need to thank my staff, supporters and volunteers who have worked tirelessly throughout this campaign. I truly could not have done it without you.

Finally, I must thank my family and specifically my wife Ellen. Without their love and support none of this would have been possible.

Hoyer, who was celebrating his own re-election in Maryland's 5th Congressional District, said Delaney was a special candidate.

"I have been recruiting members of Congress for 20 years...I've never met a more confident, experienced, in it for the right reasons" candidate than John Delaney, Hoyer said.

Democratic challenger John Delaney has won Maryland's 6th Congressional District, according to a report by Huffington Post, defeating incumbent U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett.

Incumbent candidate Roscoe Bartlett remains confident in Maryland's 6th Congressional District but acknowledges he needs to win a strong majority from precincts outside of Montgomery County, he told supporters at the Montgomery County GOP Party Tuesday night in Kensington.

Bartlett said some polls have the race with Democratic challenger John Delaney within 1 percent and 600 voters and others show a much wider marger.

"In Western Maryland there was a huge turnout, I don’t know about here," Bartlett said. "They told us in Garrett County that they had never had that many people vote by that time in the a.m. in the past so it may be a record turnout. We hope so, because we need a really big turnout in Western Maryland to compensate.

"Obviously we need to get a big majority, pluraltiy of votes in Western Maryland to compensate because we’re not going to get a big majority of voters in Montgomery County, that’s pretty clear. I’m told if we can get 35 percent here and get big surpluses in Western Maryland then we’d be ok for the evening."

Bartlett currently trails Delaney 61.83 percent (51,622 total votes) to 35.19 percent (29,382 total votes) in Maryland with 29.4 percent of precincts reporting, according to the Maryland State Board of Elections.

With 8.77 percent of Maryland precincts reporting, John Delaney's lead in Maryland's 6th Congressional District is holding steady.

The Potomac Democrat has won 6,073 election day votes to Bartlett's 3,836 and leads 66.05 percent (36,525 total votes) to 31.51 percent (17,428 total votes).

Early voting numbers show Democratic challenger John Delaney leads incumbent U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett for Maryland's 6th Congressional District.

Delaney has won 67.65 percent of voters over Bartlett's 30.2 percent, according to the Maryland State Board of Elections website. No election day or absentee ballots have been counted.

Of Delaney's 30,452 votes, 19,771 are from Montgomery County. Bartlett has won 5,478 votes in Montgomery County, 13,592 total.

In Maryland's realigned 6th Congressional District, incumbent U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett seeks an 11th consecutive term while Democratic challenger John Delaney hopes to end the Republican's 20-year hold on the position.

Bartlett and Delaney spent much of Tuesday campaigning in Frederick County, hoping to sway undecided voters in the election's final hours. 

The incumbent representative hails from Frederick County and claimed the Republican nomination with 43.8 percent of the primary vote.

Delaney, a Potomac resident, won the hotly contested Democratic bid over State Sen. Rob Garagiola. Garagiola had been supported by many state Democrats, including Gov. Martin O'Malley, in April's primary.

Delaney hopes to bring his understanding of the economy and ideas for job creation to Congress. As a successful businessman, the Potomac resident said he believes his experience and expertise will prove beneficial for lowering the deficit and unemployment rate for Maryland and the United States.

Bartlett, whose background is in science and business, was listed as the state’s wealthiest Congressman (58th out of 435 members of the House of Representative).

Bartlett will visit Potomac and Kensington Tuesday evening before heading back to Frederick for his victory party. Delaney will be at the Bolger Conference Center in Potomac starting at 8 p.m.
