Council Adopts Goals, Revamps Sign Rules

Legislation passed Monday night.

The Gaithersburg City Council passed two pieces of legislation that it has been working on for the past several months at its weekly meeting Monday night.

After many revisions and language-tweaking, the city officially adopted its Fiscal Year 2012 Strategic Plan document. The most immediately visible revision since the council last discussed the plan on March 7 was the addition of a much-desired table of contents for easier reading. The plan is designed to guide City Manager Angel Jones in developing the city's budget, and it lists several strategic directions each with its own set of goals.

The council also passed an amendment to the City Code, which defines what kinds of signs are allowed in the city. The amendment allows "nonconforming signs" to remain in place until structurally altered, which is now defined as altering at least 50 percent of the sign. Previously, the code called for nonconforming signs to be removed by Feb. 7, five years after the definitions of what constitutes a nonconforming sign were adopted.
