New Speed Camera in Gaithersburg

The new cameras bring total locations to nine.

Leadfoots beware. The Gaithersburg Police Department this week deployed a ninth speed camera location along Christopher Avenue.

The cameras are on both directions of the road, at the bottom of a gully between Gallop Hill Road and Feathertree Way.

The speed limit there is 30 mph, which means if you are going 42 mph or faster, expect to get a $40 ticket in the mail.

The other speed camera locations are along Diamond Drive, Marquis Drive, North Summit Avenue, Quince Orchard Boulevard, Quince Orchard Road, South Frederick Avenue, Watkins Mill Road, and West Deer Park Road.

While the police department maintains that the cameras' main purpose is to reduce speeding and increase driver safety, the program had mean a multi-million-dollar windfal for the city, county and state.

A speed camera ticket will cost you $40 and no points on your license.

In FY2010, the city saw $1.8 million in speec camera dollars flow into the treasury. In Fiscal 2011, the expected to get around $750,000. But in Fiscal 2012, that expectation is back up to an even $1 million.
