Spiegel Prepares to Seek Re-Election

First-term councilman has planned a re-election kick-off event for July.

In an email blast to supporters yesterday, City Councilman Ryan Spiegel indicated he is ready to seek re-election.

He said he is planning to formally kick-off his re-election campaign at an event on July 17 at 2 p.m. in Griffith Park next to City Hall.

Candidate packets are not available until July 11.

After picking up a packet, "Candidates must file a petition of nomination with the City Board of Supervisors of Elections via the City Attorney's Office," according to the city's website. "The petition must be signed by at least 100 City residents who are qualified voters."

Spiegel is among the first candidates to announce he will seek the a council seat in 2011, and the first of the sitting council members.

In 2007, council members Jud Ashman and Cathy Drzyzgula ran together. Their joint election website has not yet been updated.

Spiegel has a note on the homepage of his website asking for contributions to his re-election campaign fund.

City resident Tom Rowse has said he is running for the council, and on his website he says the current council "has not learned from the previous councils' successes."

The four-year terms of Council members Ashman, Drzyzgula and Spiegel will expire in November.

Elections will be held Nov. 8.
