Quick Tip: Don't Forget to Keep It Fresh

Blogger Robin Ferrier's quick tip of the week focuses on the importance of making sure your biographical information on social media sites is up-to-date.

This tip comes via an interaction I had last week on one of my Twitter accounts. (I'm the tweeple behind the Gaithersburg Book Festival @gburgbookfest Twitter account.)

The tip: Make sure your bio information is up-to-date.

I received a direct message to my @gburgbookfest account from a new follower. We created the account before last year's festival and hadn't thought to go in and update the bio to reflect the date for this year's festival. (Insert shameless marketing plug here: The Gaithersburg Book Festival will be on May 19 this year.)

And it got me thinking: I know plenty of people on Facebook or LinkedIn who don't think to update their information when they get a new job, a promotion, etc. And it's great if you're being active in these communities -- it's essential if you're going to be ther e -- but you also want to make sure your "static" info is up-to-date, especially if you're adding new followers, friends, connections, etc., which you should be doing if you're using these outlets for marketing and PR purposes.

One solution: Put an recurring appointment in your calendar to review and update your online profiles. It could be every other month, every six months, or however often you choose. But by automating it and setting your calendar to remind you, you'll make sure that you're keeping it fresh. (And accurate.)
