Local Talent Shines at Capital Classic

Gaithersburg High School's Malcolm Miller and Quince Orchard's Andre Gaines competed against the areas best.

Gaithersburg High School senior basketball standout Malcolm Miller was among a contingent of Montgomery County players who competed in Sunday’s 38th annual Capital Classic High School All-Star Game at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro.

The 6-foot-6 swingman joined Quince Orchard’s Andre Gaines (7 points), Springbrook’s Enerio Jones (4 points) and Blake’s Brandon Hedley (15 points) on the Suburban All-Stars roster in the preliminary game.

Miller finished 3-for-4 from the free throw line accounting for all three of his points in the Suburban All-Stars’ 104-97 victory over the District All-Stars. The Holy Cross signee also grabbed two rebounds and doled out three assists for the Suburban All-Star team.

“It was a fun experience coming out here with some of the top players around,” said Miller, who guided the Trojans to a 15-9 record during the 2010-2011 campaign.

Miller played opposite Georgetown Prep senior and fellow Holy Cross recruit Taylor Abt who competed for the District All-Stars and also finished with three points.

“It was good,” Miller said about competing against his future teammate. “We were talking on the court a little bit. [We had] a little bit of fun but everything was cool.”

Miller and Abt will head to a Holy Cross program that finished 8-21 overall including 7-7 in the Patriot League this season.

Miller said he looks forward to teaming with the 6-foot-9 Abt at the Massachusetts school next season.

“We’ve been trying to get as many workouts together as possible,” said Miller, “so we’re trying to get some chemistry going.”

Miller had 3 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds in 11 minutes, while Gaines had 7 points, 1 assist, 1 rebound, and 1 steal in 20 minutes.

Miller has signed to attend and play basketball for the College of Holy Cross.  Gaines is currently unsigned.

Eleanor Roosevelt High School's Prince Okoroh, a 6'5" small forward (#2), earned game Most Valuable Player honors with a standout performance. Okoroh had 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals in 27 minutes.
