September Is Healthy Aging Month

It appears there is a month for everything!  This month is, among other things, Healthy Aging Month.  Let’s run with that!  Healthy Aging is a process.  It begins before we are born with healthy choices made by the mother.  Well, you get the picture.  The question is what can we do about Healthy Aging now?

The key is prevention through making good choices.  For example:

Take Care of Your Teeth

Brushing and flossing removes plaque.  Plaque build-up becomes a hard substance called tartar.  This can lead to gum disease.  The germs or toxins that form because of poor oral hygiene can travel to other parts of your body, including your heart, and cause damage.

Heart Health

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.  In 2009 more than half of the deaths, due to heart disease, were men.  There are three primary risk factors that lead to heart disease.  They are: High blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking.  Lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol will help lower your risk of having a heart attack.  To protect your heart you should; follow your doctor’s orders and pay strict attention to medication adherence; eat a diet that is low in salt, saturated fat, and cholesterol, eat fresh fruits and vegetables; walk at a good clip for 10 minutes per day; and don’t smoke.  If you smoke talk to your doctor about ways to help you quit.

Stroke Prevention

One of the leading causes of stroke is high blood pressure.  Have your blood pressure taken at least once a year and more often if you have had a heart attack or stroke, are diabetic, have kidney disease, high cholesterol or if you are overweight.  If you have atrial fibrillation, or Afib, talk to your doctor as this causes the heart to work differently.  Your doctor will know how to minimize your risks of stroke.  If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation.  Quit smoking.  Smoking doubles your risk of a stroke.  If you are a diabetic follow your doctor’s orders to lower your blood sugar.  Exercise daily.

Eating Sensibly

The secret to many of the Healthy Aging issues is proper nutrition.  Eat less red meat.  Eat more chicken and fish.  Eat fresh vegetables and fruits.  Drink lots of water.  Control portion sizes.  Before you eat, ask yourself, “am I really hungry” and “is it worth a few extra pounds?”

Healthy aging can start at ANY age!  It's never too late to take care of your health and well-being.  Start today...you'll thank yourself, and so will your loved ones.
